What defines a woman? Can a woman be a girl? And can a girl be a woman? And if that would be the case, than what am I?

Heels, a serious coat, a sophisticated posture, a full-grown body and the first signs of wrinkles, all are obvious signals of being a real woman. Though, are they really?

Since recent years I have been confronted with giggly teenagers looking at me. It made me realize how much we have come to differ from one and another. And it made me wonder how I ever stepped away from being such a girl, careless and free without any mental struggles. I guess there is no precise moment in time that pinpoints this crucial change. So if it doesn't relate to time, does being a woman have anything to do with age?

It's a change in personal beliefs and values. Where I'd normally never wonder what I'd be doing next year, I now find myself cluttered in complex possibilities (for even next week). And here's the cliché, it is called... responsibility. Which is not something you have been taught or asked, but it is a feeling that arises at a certain point in life. And I'm not talking about the boring kind of responsibility (as being on time or paying your bills, though it's important too) it also has has something to do with the responsibility to explore, learn and grow. It's when you discover you are in charge of your own luck, and nobody else is. In other words, it is when you start living your life. Just you, living by your own rules.

All that being said, this shift in status is quite terrifying. Though it has not taken place yet, the first time somebody would approach me with "ma'am" - doesn't sound like fun, at all. Already the realization of no longer being a teenager, makes me wonder if I'd ever be that carefree, free-spirited and naive again?

So to take away some of that fear, I'd like to refer to  myself as 'a woman that is still a girl'. What do you think? How do you define a woman? And what do you call me?

  10. I think you are a girl when you want to be a woman, and you are a woman when you want to be a girl again. It's a pitty that no one is ever completely content about their age and phase of living, though I told myself to be happy with how old I am. I am seventeen now, there are a lot of things I can't do yet, a lot of things I don't want to do anymore, and a lot I have to do. I miss the time when my decissions didn't make sense, when my mother could solve my problems. But I try to count my blessings and it makes me sometimes very happy.
